Mantova, an overlooked gem

South-West of Venezia along he river Po, Mantova  is a tiny cute city more than once awarded for the high quality of life it offers. You can ride your bike through the city centre, along the river or up and down its many parks. Once a year, its charming squares and colonnades host the biggest literature festival in Italy... and the local food is simply delicious!

Known locally as la bella addormentata - the sleeping beauty because of the artificial lakes that softly surround it, Mantova boasts medieval dimensions that make it a joy for fans of slow exploration.

As I mentioned before, the best way to visit Mantova is by bike. You can easily rent it there and find your way through the city thanks to the many colorful maps spread around, like this one on the right.

4 things you can do!

Don't forget to buy a Sbrisolona cake, the local speciality! Just avoid the many cheap varieties you can find for few Euros. Go for the hand made one. It's definitely worth the price! I step into a local bakery next to the main square and I found the kindest baker ever!

A full belly is the best start to go visit the medieval Castle and the amazing Palazzo Te. Breathtaking 3D renaissance paintings are waiting for you.

Last but not least, go play with the free swans along the river like I did!
